Homemade Dog Food Prep for Two 70lb American Pit Bull Terriers

Feeding my two 70lb American Pit Bull Terriers means meal prepping 40 bags of homemade food every 10 days. With healthy ingredients like turkey, beef, veggies, and potatoes, this diet has boosted their health and energy. Here’s how I make their meals!

I’ve got two American Pit Bull Terriers, each weighing around 70 pounds, and keeping them well-fed and healthy is no small feat! Every 10 days, I whip up 40 bags of homemade food, each weighing between 1.5–2 lbs. They get fed twice a day, so this meal prep keeps us running smoothly without having to scramble.

Here’s what goes into their meals:

The Breakdown

Meat (20 lbs total):

  • 9 lbs of ground turkey
  • 11.5 lbs of grass-fed ground beef (I like to switch it up week to week)

Grains & Veggies:

  • 11 cups of jasmine rice
  • 4 lbs of broccoli
  • 4 lbs of peas
  • 2.5 lbs of green beans
  • 2.5 lbs of peas-and-carrot mix

Fruits:

  • 1 lb of blueberries
  • 1 lb of mixed fruit (mango, pineapple, and strawberries)

Potatoes:

  • 10 lbs of regular potatoes
  • 10 lbs of sweet potatoes

Note: All fruits and veggies are frozen—it’s just easier this way!

The Process Homemade Dog Food

  1. Prep the Base:
In a massive stock pot (I actually use a turkey fryer, no joke), I mix together all the cooked jasmine rice, frozen veggies, and fruits. This becomes the base of the meals. I scoop a generous cup of this mixture into each bag.
  2. Cook the Meat:
I cook all the ground meats and drain the grease—but I leave just a little for flavor and nutrients unless one of the boys is having a pancreatitis flare-up. In that case, I boil the grease out completely. Once the meat is ready, I evenly distribute a cup into 20 bags, then add slightly more to the other 20 (those become breakfast portions).
  3. Add the Potatoes:
Each sweet potato gets halved, so I add half a sweet potato to every bag. For the regular potatoes, I do the same, though sometimes I end up with extra potatoes, so a few bags get a whole one.

Why I Do This

One of my boys has seizures, a history of pancreatitis, and both have allergies. Since switching to this homemade diet almost a year ago, the results have been incredible. Their health has improved, their bloodwork looks fantastic, and even their energy levels are better.

It’s a labor of love, but seeing how much it’s helped them makes every minute worth it.
