Balanced Homemade Dog Food Recipe: Lamb, Hoki, Turkey & Veggies

This homemade dog food recipe combines lamb, hoki, turkey, and nutritious veggies for a balanced meal. With added essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin E, and iodine, it’s perfect for keeping your dogs healthy. Here’s how I make it and store it for easy feeding!

After cooking this batch, I managed to fill 10 containers, each holding about 719g (1.59 lbs) of food (the containers weigh 20g each). This lasts us just over three days—Sharky eats two containers a day, and Goose has one.

This recipe is balanced, with 1.4 calories per gram or 42 calories per ounce. Here’s how I make it:

Balanced Homemade Dog Food Recipe

Ingredients:

Base Protein Mix:

  • 1.5kg (3.3 lbs) lamb mince (15% fat)
  • 1.2kg (2.65 lbs) turkey mince (7% fat)
  • 700g (1.54 lbs) lamb heart, minced (4% fat)

Additions:

  • 400g (14 oz) hoki fillets (or other white fish like cod, haddock, or whiting)
  • 1kg (2.2 lbs) zucchini, minced
  • 400g (14 oz) green beans, minced
  • 300g (10 oz) cauliflower, minced
  • 100g (3.5 oz) quinoa flakes (optional; you can swap for other grains or extra veggies)
  • 300g (10 oz) beef liver, minced (or 100g/3.5 oz freeze-dried beef liver powder)
  • 90g (3 oz) turmeric
  • 60g (2 oz) nutritional yeast

After Cooking:

  • 400g (14 oz) scrambled eggs (or 600g/1.32 lbs if using all lamb or all turkey)
  • Essential nutrients:
    • 72g (2.54 oz) bone meal (calcium)
    • 50g (1.8 oz) wheat germ oil (vitamin E)
    • 3g (0.1 oz) kelp powder (iodine)
    • 450g (1 lb) sardines in water (no salt, for vitamin D)
    • 100g (3.5 oz) oysters (zinc)
(Alternatively, you can simplify by using 240g/8.4 oz of Dog Child Essential Nutrients mix, but still keep the sardines.)

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Simmer: Bring 750ml of water to a low simmer.
  2. Cook Protein Base: Add the lamb, turkey, and lamb heart to the pot. Mix well, cover tightly to seal in the juices, and cook until the meat is just lightly pink.
  3. Add Veggies & Grains: Stir in the hoki, zucchini, green beans, cauliflower, and quinoa flakes. Mix well and cover tightly.
  4. Cook Thoroughly: Continue cooking until everything is tender.
  5. Add Scrambled Eggs: Once the protein and veggies are done, mix in scrambled eggs.
  6. Cool & Add Nutrients: Allow everything to cool completely before adding the essential nutrients. Mix thoroughly.

Storage:

I portion the food into containers, each holding 719g (1.59 lbs), and store them as needed.

This recipe works great for my dogs, and it’s been a game-changer for their health!
