Cooking for my dogs has been such a rewarding experience, and I love how excited they get every week when it’s time to make their food. They literally drool while I prep their meals—it’s the cutest thing! I’ve been making this recipe for years, and the results are undeniable. Their coats are glossy, their energy is through the roof, and they’re just overall thriving.

Here’s the breakdown of my go-to recipe that I swear by:

Protein

  • 4 farm-fresh eggs (I grind the shells for added calcium)
  • 1 lb ground beef, lamb, or elk (I rotate proteins every batch to keep things interesting)
    • Note: My Euro Red has a poultry allergy, so chicken and turkey are off the table. Some proteins I use: bison, deer, wild boar, or even elk.
  • 1 lb salmon and 1 lb sardines for omegas

Organ Meat

  • 2 lbs beef liver
  • 1–2 lbs beef heart

Veggies

  • 16 oz pumpkin purée
  • 1 lb sweet potatoes (about 2 medium-sized ones)
  • 1 lb carrots
  • 1 bag celery
  • 16 oz spinach
  • 1 lb green or yellow zucchini

Fruit

  • 3 apples (no seeds or core)
  • 4–5 oz each of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries

Whole Grains

  • 4 cups quinoa rice blend (red, white, black)

Herbs and Supplements

  • 1/4 bunch curly parsley (finely chopped; not Italian parsley)
  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast

Liquids

  • Homemade bone broth (I make a batch ahead of time)
  • Goat’s milk

I also incorporate some kibble into their diet. I hydrate it by adding 1/4 cup bone broth and 1/4 cup goat’s milk, then top it with the homemade food. The combination is so healthy and packed with nutrients.

Prep Notes

  • I only cook the rice and meat. Everything else—eggs, veggies, fruit—is added raw to retain nutrients.
  • This batch lasts about 1.5 weeks for my two boys. I split it into thirds: one third stays in the fridge for immediate feeding, while the other two go into the freezer.

Transformations I’ve Seen

We adopted our Blue Doberman about four months ago, and his coat was in rough shape. After just a few months on this food, his coat is absolutely glowing—it’s so soft and shiny now! Our Red Euro Doberman has been on this homemade diet since he was 8 weeks old (he’s now 4), and I truly believe it’s why he’s so healthy and vibrant.

Seeing how much this food benefits my boys keeps me motivated to keep making it. If anyone is considering homemade dog food, I hope this inspires you. It’s worth every bit of effort when you see the difference in your pups! 😊
